Birding at Indawgyi WildLife Sanctuary in Kachin State

Northern Myanmar

Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary, it was recognized as ASEAN Heritage Park and the largest inland lake in Southeast Asia, is a wildlife reserve of Myanmar. It is located in Mohnyin Township in Kachin State. It occupies an area of 299.32 square miles (775 km2) and was established in 1999. The visitor can enjoy the beauty of the largest natural wetland Ecosystem Lake in Myanmar. It has an annual year round raining season with an average 1440 mm rainfall. In summer, average temperature is 27.9ºC and in the cold season 17.2ºC. To access Indawgyi Lake from Yangon to Mohnyin is 700 miles (1120 km); Mohnyin to Hopin 45 miles (72 km) road and Hopin to Lontene village is 27 miles (43 km) on rough dry weather road. The region is home to rare bird species and other wild animals including wild elephants, golden cat, the Malaya sun bear, bantengs and gaurs, rare gibbon species, forest birds and various species of fishes inhabiting, growing sea-weeds and marine-plants.

For birding, we can observe Spot-billed pelican, vulture, the resident water birds, migratory birds and forest dwelling birds.
